Rights of Mother Earth

Introduction

Here is my original blog post on this: Universal Declaration of Rights of Mother Earth.

For far too long has Humanity abused and violated the natural world causing irreparable harm which has resulted in the extinction of over 70% of the species that once roamed our planet as well as being the genesis for what may eventually lead to Humanity’s extinction – Climate Change.

In order help combat climate change and to create a sustainable future for Humanity, we need to ratify the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth (UDRME) to create the legal framework to acknowledge and protect the Rights of Nature and the natural world. We need to establish a legal requirement to protect and honor nature, and to allow we the people to sue on its behalf. There must be repercussions for those who destroy the interdependent web of life that supports ALL life on planet Earth.

Without an ethical and legal structure in place to protect the Rights of Nature businesses and nations are able to violate and destroy these vital ecosystems and we will not have any legal recourse to prevent this.

The Hague needs to also expand to include not only trials for Crimes Against Humanity, but also Crimes Against Nature (which by extension are crimes against Humanity by virtue of our interdependence).

The UDRME is needed to be able to help us all combat environmental damage and to hold those parties who are responsible for such atrocities responsible for the horrors they have committed. We needed an official way to:

  • show that the natural world is an important part of our interdependent existence and Humanity’s survival
  • protect the natural world in all of its forms
  • engage in legal action on its behalf
  • have recourse to protect ourselves and the environment from those who would wish to endanger our delicate ecosystems or Humanity itself indirectly.
